As you know, I hold a special place in my heart for our nation’s military veterans, and each year, I share with you my thoughts on the importance of recognizing our service men and women on Veterans Day. 2018 is a very special year, marking the Centennial Commemoration of the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.
Let’s look back through history to learn how the holiday we know as Veterans Day has come to be.
While Veterans Day has always been commemorated on November 11, the holiday used to be known as Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day in 1919 to recognize the end of World War I, when hostilities ceased on November 11 at 11 am (the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month).
Forty years later, Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday—dedicated to the cause of world peace. The first Veterans Day parade didn’t take place until 1947 when a World War II veteran organized the event to honor veterans of all wars. In 1954, Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day to recognize Veterans of all U.S. wars.
Let’s not wait until Veterans Day to show our gratitude to our family members, friends and neighbors who served honorably in our nation’s military so that we can enjoy the freedom that we share as citizens of this great country.
As we go about our daily lives and interact with these brave men and women, let’s take a moment to thank them for their service. As you can see from the photos above, I took advantage of an opportunity to do just that at a July 4th parade this summer, an event I’ve been attending for about 30 years now. Meanwhile, on a corporate level, Genesis10’s Veterans Program continues to help service men and women upon return to civilian life find meaningful careers in business and technology.
