For many Americans, Memorial Day marks a beginning, the start of the summer season when we spend more time outdoors with our families and friends, enjoying one another and the warmer weather. We head for the beach. Pack a picnic. Barbecue. All these things, of course, are good, and the time away is well deserved after all your hard work this year.
But let’s also reflect on the true meaning of this important and beautiful holiday. Memorial Day is the day that we come together as nation to remember and honor the U.S. service men and women who have given their lives for our great nation, preserving the many freedoms that we have and sometimes take for granted.
Forever grateful for the service and sacrifice of these brave men and women, let’s take time this weekend to truly commemorate the holiday. Here are some suggestions:
- Watch a parade, or participate in one if you can by marching or volunteering to help with set up or take down.
- Visit a cemetery and place flowers by the grave of loved ones who died while serving.
- Observe the National Moment of Remembrance on Monday at 3 pm, with a few minutes of silence or by listening to Taps.
Ask your family and friends—especially the children—to join you. If it’s not already one of your traditions, maybe it will mark the beginning of one that will long hold deep meaning for you.
