When it comes to hot trends in Austin tech, data is the top dog, says Tara Wyborny, Vice President of Talent Development at Dev10, Genesis10’s Talent Creation program.
“We’re seeing the data space stand on its own,” Wyborny said during a virtual panel discussion, “Who’s Austin Hiring,” by Austin Women in Technology (AWT). “It’s pervasive across every single business. Everyone is trying to harness the power of data.”
Dev10 creates and delivers net new emerging talent trained in industry in-demand technologies. About half of the people who are accepted into the program are recent college grads, while the other half are career-changers. Dev10 Associates are paid to complete three months of training, are placed into their first tech job and receive ongoing mentoring from the Dev10 team. Colleen McIntyre, Managing Director for Genesis10 in Central Texas, and Stephanie Navas, Client Director for Dev10, provided an overview of Dev10 and Genesis10 to those attending the panel discussion.
In her role, Wyborny hears direct from employers in Austin and other metro areas on the type of tech skills they are looking for today. For example, she’s hearing from businesses that the demand for “front-end development is huge.” That contrasts to years past when back-end development was the skill employers were recruiting for.
Wyborny was joined on the panel by Angela Means, Assistant Director for the City of Austin; Kimberly Storin, Chief Marketing Officer for Zayo; and Bryan Chaney, Employer Brand Lead, Corporate Recruitment for Workrise. The discussion was moderated by Heather Trumpfheller, President of AWT.
Specific to Austin, Wyborny noted that unlike many markets where one platform or programming language may be dominant, Austin’s tech market is so diversified that there are career paths for nearly any type of skill. “In Austin, if you’ve got the skill, if you’ve got the interest, there’s probably an opportunity for you,” she said. Dev10 offers three different course tracks: Java, Data and .Net.

In addition to discussing tech market trends, the panelists also commented on how the recruiting and onboarding processes have evolved alongside the work-from-home/hybrid trend prevalent during the pandemic as well as the national worker shortage. “We all know that the interview window has shrunk dramatically,” Wyborny said. “It you want to act on top talent, you’re not going to wait.”

She also noted that working virtually has in some ways improved the onboarding process for her Dev10 team at Genesis10. “We’ve had to build additional discipline into onboarding,” she said.
